Join us on June 24th for an E. 11th St. block party, in celebration of East Austin culture and community! Each month from June through October 2011, DiverseArts Culture Works is hosting the seventh annual season of Fourth Fridays!: a family-oriented celebration of art, music and community in the heart of Austin’s African American Cultural Heritage District.

Headlining this month’s event is Miss Lavelle White, a Texas rhythm & blues legend who has performed with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight, and many more.  Miss Lavelle began her career in the 1950’s Houston as a teenager singing church spirituals. She gained acclaim in her later teens by writing and singing with Johnny Copeland and touring with B. B. King, and has been a mainstay in the Texas music scene ever since. Her most recent album, 2003’s Into the Mystic, has garnered critical acclaim. In the words of the Los Angeles New Times, “Like they once said about Coca Cola, Lavelle White is the real thing."

Bring your lawn chairs, picnic blankets and family to Kenny Dorham’s Backyard for an evening under the stars with one of Texas’ most iconic performers! In addition to a stellar musical experience, we will also be providing free beer for adults and free pizza for the kids (while it lasts), courtesy of Live Oak Brewery and East Side Pies.  From 6 to 8 pm, we will be providing free children’s hands-on art activities, with a $5 cover for adults staying for the evening concert. We will also have available for purchase tasty organic treats from our new partner, Sun Farm Kitchens Co-op.

Join us for a night of food, art, activities and fun as we celebrate East Austin’s vibrant community!

Stay tuned for more information about participating vendors, venues and businesses on east Eleventh St. from Branch st. to Angelina.
