The word/jazz performance series and Jazz OUTside with Diverse Arts presents collaborative spoken word and improvised music performances that feature an ever evolving all-star cast of Austin’s best performance poets, musicians, and writers who create live-on-the-spot spontaneous compositions. These are decidedly not "poetry readings." Now one of Austin’s longest lived spoken word and music projects (since 2000), word/jazz creates a comfortable setting for exploration of how traditional call-and-response can be adapted to performance situations where artists are free to improvise based on real time inspiration of the moment.

Please note, these shows start early 7pm and end at 10. Many people have been arriving late, after 9, and wondering why they missed the show.

Word/Jazz Low Stars
Anchored by a rhythm section of gifted improvisers—Doug Marcis on drums, Chris Vestra on guitar, Harold McMillan on bass and gifted soloists (Cami Rocha on saxophones) who keep the exploration moving with riff-based groove-noise, Harold McMillan’s word/jazz lowstars includes local spoken word stand-outs Ivanho, Thom the World Poet, Ricardo Acevedo, and others. Past featured performers include Valerie Bridgeman Davis, raulsalinas, Zell Miller, Daniel Davis Clayton, Poet on Watch, Sharon Bridgeforth, Chandra Washington and numerous other world-class Austin-based poets, writers, and players.
