DiverseArts is pleased to announce its participation in "Real Community is Real Art." As part of a weekend of activities dedicated to celebrating neighborhood culture and building community solidarity, DiverseArts presents a night of music at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard: The Blue of it All.

The evening features headliner The Ephraim Owens Quintet, Austin's most sought-after jazz trumpeter. A Dallas native, Owens has been electrifying stages around Austin with his trumpet skills for the past twelve years. Ephraim has played with Erykah Badu, DJ Jazzy Jeff,String Cheese Incident, Calexico and many others. On this evening of two sets, he brings his neo-bop quintet, featuring some of Austin's most gifted rhythm players and soloists. NOT TO BE MISSED!

Opening the evening is the incomparable LZ Love Band who, after making a name for herself in San Francisco and being featured on Epitaph Records’ compilation, “San Francisco Bay’s Best Blues,” moved to Austin in 2004. Already beloved by fans across the country, Love’s star only seems to be rising: November 29th, 2007 was declared “LZ Love Day” by the City of Austin, which has also included her work in the Austin Convention & Visitor's Bureau's compilation CD.

This is a family-friendly event, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets and settle in for a great night of music, fun and community. Plenty of good BBQ burgers and wraps are available to go along with cold soft drinks, complimentary beer (courtesy of Centex Beverage), and snacks for the kids. Our hope is that the evening will be a perfect East Austin fall night where you can relax, enjoy good food and drinks, meet your neighbors and hang out with friends. The idea is to celebrate community with music, dancing and fun!

Please join us September 19th from 7 PM to 11 PM to enjoy the live music and support the efforts of DiverseArts and Texas Folklife to support local, neighborhood culture and build community solidarity.
