June 25, 2008 7-9 pm

Cafe Mundi
1704 East 5th St. Austin, TX 78702

This month, word/jazz and its unique brand of performance art can be found at Café Mundi. Part of the show will feature an open-mike audition. We are particularly interested in discovering new wordsmiths to become permanent members word/jazz lowstars poet posse. Join us, June 25th from 7 to 9 PM, for an evening of word/jazz, enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of Café Mundi and the open-mike exhibition.

Since its creation in 1999, word/jazz has created a setting in which artists can explore the possibilities of adapting the tradition of call-and-response to an improvisational, performance context. As a collaborative fusion of spoken word and improvisational music, word/jazz showcases some of Austin’s finest poets, including Ivanho, Thom the Word Poet and Ricardo Acevedo. Featured soloists have included Valerie Bridgeman Davis, raulsalinas, Zell Miller, Sharon Bridgeforth and Chandra Washington. In each piece, music and poetry interpenetrate one another, blending the rhythms of speech and the flow of music, creating art spontaneous and self-contained.
