DiverseArts is proud to host "Sans Borders" a collection of paintings and prints by Thomas "Taiwo" DuVall. Well known and respected for his talent as a musician and folklorist, DuVall is also an accomplished artist. He worked as an artist for Third Press, NY from 1972-74, where he illustrated the popular children's book The Adventures of Smallhead, Squarehead, and Fathead. In 1993 he was awarded the State of Maryland Governors Citation by former governor William Donald Schaefer. His artwork was also published in the International Review of African American Art (vol. 16, No. 3) in 1999, but throughout his career he has continued to pursue personal artist endeavors, many of which will be exhibited.
The exhibit includes a range of works spanning from forty years up until the present. Many of DuVall's woodcut prints of both urban and native scenes will be on display. They are marked by their amazing detail and contrast. Also included are his paintings, which vary from dramatic realism to stylized scenes with obvious folk influences.
Born in Washington D.C., Taiwo has chosen Austin as his place of residence, and DiverseArts along with the New East Gallery is proud to represent him as an local artist. The opening will take place at the gallery on February 16 from 7-10pm and the show will run through March.
