On Thursday May 26, DiverseArts Culture Works is hosting a fundraising event at the New East Gallery to benefit local artisan, designer and community activist Nailah Sankofa, who is currently experiencing a housing crisis that may require her to relocate.

Sankofa has curated numerous visual art exhibits at the New East Gallery, which works closely with most of the African American artists working in the city.  She is heavily involved in the cultural activities and events within the African American Cultural Heritage District of Austin. Because of her long-term personal investment and work, Sankofa is an irreplaceable member of the community.

This event features an auction of visual works and gift certificates for goods and services by Nailah Sankofa, Carla "Nada" Nickerson, Ifaniike "Taiwo" Sankofa, Charles Randolph, and other prestigious local artists and friends of Sankofa. DiverseArts is donating all proceeds directly to the artist, and will accept further cash donations through the Uhuru: Afrikan Artisan’s Emergency Relief Fund on www.diversarts.org and at the gallery. This fund is an ongoing project, beginning with Sankofa, which DiverseArts created to raise money to aid local artists in crisis.
