DiverseArts New East Gallery is proud to announce the opening of the 2014 Edition Facing East: 48 Hours in the Life of East Austin. The exhibit will run from September 29 through October 24, 2014 at our gallery located at 1601 East 5th Street, Suite 106, in the Saltillo Lofts Building.
This year's exhibition is a retrospective of selected best-in-show works from previous Facing East competitions, pieces from past events at the celebrated Kenny Dorham's Backyard, as well as artists featured in DiverseArts Culture Works' Blues Family Tree Project taken between 1990 and 1998. Photographers featured include Diane Watts, Alejandro Diaz, Lauren Tarbel, Harold McMillan, T.O. Petitt and others. Blues Family Tree images feature archival shots of early East Side Blues and Jazz luminaries such as Grey Ghost, T.D Bell, Erbie Bowser, Martin Banks, Pat Patterson, Donald "Duck" Jennings, Ural DeWitty and many others.
The public is invited to visit us and view these historically significant snaps shots or East Austin's Cultural past. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday, 2:00-6:00pm, and by appointment. A veiwing reception is set for late October. Stay tuned for details.
Facing East is a multimedia docu-arts exhibit of visual media, shot within a single 48-hour period in East Austin (east of IH 35), with the purpose of reflecting the myriad perspectives and experiences of life in this culturally-diverse area. This event is part of a larger undertaking by DiverseArts Culture Works to collect and archive material on the past and present of the East Austin Cultural Heritage District.
