Come join neighbors, friends, and the student filmmakers of UT’s East Austin Stories class for the screening of twelve new, short-documentary films on Thursday May 8th at two different east side locations. First, at 7:00 p.m. the Parish Hall of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on East Tenth and Navasota Streets and, then again, that same night, at 9:15 p.m., outside, at Kenny Dorham's Backyard, next to the historic, Victory Grill.
East Austin is a fusion of people, places, and stories, often unseen or unnoticed. University of Texas film students find stories and bring them to you. This semester, students have collaborated with artists, businesses, and communities to create an exciting variety of short documentaries including:
Danza Guerreros Azteca, the traditional dance group who make their own costumes and carry on a tradition that dates back hundreds of years, in order to save their own culture.
Urban Farms, a look at the controversy surrounding an East Austin urban farm and its. surprising role in the larger issue of the city's gentrification.
SprATX In the past year SprATX has dramatically changed the game for many local artists and their work. By providing a reliable space to sell their work, network with other artists, and collaborate efficiently, SprATX has grown at exponential rates.
Esquina! A short film about the owners of Esquina Tango and the community that has grown around this non-profit organization committed to spreading culture through health, language and dance.
Travis State School, the former “mental institution” that was once home to men and women, residents and staff, that, through the years, became a place where relationships grew and residents thrived.
Plus, stories about singer/songwriter Danny Malone, East Austin Chickens, Inside Books, Fixies and the folks who love them, and much more. Two free screenings on the same night, 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Hall, across the street from the Texas State Cemetery at Navasota and East 10th Streets, and then again at 9:15 at Kenny Dorham’s Backyard, on East 11th next to the Victory Grill. All screenings are free. See previous East Austin Stories documentaries on the website EastAustinStories.org
