Facing East: 48 Hours in the life of East Austin Summer 2009

Creative Opportunity

Who: New East Gallery
What: Call for Entries: Photo/Film capturing life in East Austin
Where: East Austin
When: Shooting weekend: Noon June 19 - Noon June 21, 2009; Submission deadline for photography: June 26th; film/video: July 7th

DiverseArts Culture Works’ New East Gallery is looking for photography and film/video entries to be exhibited in “Facing East: 48 Hours in the life of East Austin,” an annual documentation of Central East Austin’s culture-rich community that reflects diverse views of rapidly changing – or unchanged – aspects of East Austin as seen through the eyes of various artists.  Images are to reflect the identity of East Austin as documented on Juneteenth weekend, June 19th - 21st, and will be submitted to jury to be selected for the July 17th opening.

“Facing East” is part of founder Harold McMillan’s larger mission for the Austin Blues Family Tree Project. The Blues Family Tree Project is the living record of Austin musicians and artists’ oral histories and performances created in an effort to address the large-scale scarcity of collected archival materials that document the personal lives, neighborhoods, and institutions found east of IH-35.

In December 2007, the Austin City Council designated Central East Austin an "African American Cultural Heritage District." "Facing East" serves dual purposes: to further the development and appreciation of this cultural heritage district and to document East Austin's vibrant cultural community through the creative lenses of Austin's resident artists.

Artists can access the entry form on the DiverseArts website, www.DiverseArts.org, or pick up a hard copy at the New East Gallery located at 1601 East 5th Street, suite 106, and other locations throughout Austin – consult website or call 512.477.9438 for locations.
